Sometimes it’s hard to come up with gift ideas for guys. Generally speaking, we don’t really need that much. The stuff we do need we usually take care of ourselves. You have to really use the old noggin to come up with some ideas for Dad’s across the world.
However, after home brewing for about 3 years, I’ve found that a great gift for Dads out there is something attached to a hobby. Hobbies for guys are usually man stuff like outdoor activities, hunting, shooting, or cars. One of the best man hobbies is brewing beer.
Think about it this way, men like their beer. They also like to be self reliant for things. You put those together and you have home brewing. The beauty of this is that you can get your Dad started home brewing relatively inexpensively. At a price point of $70 dollars, you’re talking about something that isn’t too extravagant, and yet still substantial enough to be a good gift.
How I got started in home brewing
A number of years ago I was really into beer. I was working in a beer distributor at the time and was constantly surrounded by top tier beers made by craftsmen. In that environment, it’s had not to start thinking about making your own.
My brother surprised me on Christmas by getting me a beginner home brewing kit. His good friend from college started out as a home brewer himself and turned the hobby into a very successful brewery. He consulted with his friend on what to get and made the purchase.
Ever since that time I had a new hobby to play with. I’ve been making beers and meads of all kinds and now have a marketable skill I can play around with. Sitting in my basement right now is a few cases of brew that I created.
Giving the gift of a new hobby
As someone who has struggled to come up with gift ideas for my own Dad, I know that it’s a difficult process. You end up getting side tracked and eventually you just get something that you always get and be done with it.
Why not get your Dad the gift of a new hobby this year? If you get a home brewing kit for your dad I guarantee they will like it if they are all into beer. This is a hobby that is very easy to get into and can turn into something extremely complex if they want to take it there.
Benefits of home brewing:
- learn about beer
- learn about microbiology
- learn patience
- learn self-reliance
- save money on alcohol
Brewing beer and mead is about more than just drinking. It’s about craftsmanship and creating art. Making your own brews is pretty easy, but making top quality great tasting brews is another thing altogether.
The gift that keeps on giving
I’ve been on this home brewing journey for about 3 years constantly making new brews. When I think back on all the gifts I’ve been given in my life, none stand out more than my home brewing kit. It’s something that I constantly use and was the gateway into a new art.
Getting your Dad a home brewing kit will be the start of a new lifestyle for him. So many of us are bogged down in uncreative endeavors such as watching tv. Give a gift that will foster a creative use of your Dad’s time.
